Preteen Pornstar: Intellectual Art
No, this is not an illicit porno ring, this is art. It’s deep. It takes some thought and a little time to get. At first listen, their new CD, “In Goat We Thrust” is a little hard to get into, but after a time you start to gain an understanding of what is being said. Through a series of e-mails with Miriku, AKA Miriku no dj, one of the founding members he gave me some insight into what the band is really about.
There are about 40 members of the project. If you could imagine taking the concept of Net.Art and translating it to Music.Art, this is what you would get. There is a message. Sometimes the message is that there is no message, but a lot of the time, there is something being said. Some of the time the message is political, but only in such a way, that they are criticizing those in power.
To understand the scope of this project, and gain a better understanding of the art behind what they are doing, we can look toward a couple of noted songs. One song that they are looking to record at some point in the future has never, as far as I know, been played to completion. The song was to be 11 hours long, but the police shut down the operation 10 hours in. This song is called “A Day in the Life of a Post-Apocalyptic Child”. Another of their songs called “Uncanny Valley (Extended Mix)” was a mere 3 seconds. It is clear that “Uncanny Valley” was not intended to be listened to as a long-form enduring song, but rather as a piece of art, perhaps the product of someone’s humorous imagination.
There are other songs where they combine American political recordings with Nazi German Political propaganda sound-bites. And even on “In Goat We Thrust” there are layers of sounds and meanings in all of their songs. To listen once is an adventure, but to listen again is to start to gain an understanding. Set aside your conception of commonplace music and prepare yourself for an intellectual journey through sonic art.
