More Gothic Make-up Tips
Here are a few general rules for making sure that you look devilish during you’re midnight escapades. Tips like these will be sure to get a few second glances at that 3am Denney’s run!
- We all know that every good Goth kid has a beautifully light and ghostly white pallor. This turned into a problem for me a few years back. Being Greek, I have naturally tan, olive toned skin. My skin got darker when I began to work as a postal carrier. Here is a good tip for people who work outdoors or can’t avoid the tan. Hit up a costume shop and buy a tube of regular clown white face (get the kind that comes in the tube as you will be mixing it). While you are out, pick up a small plastic container that will hold about one to two ounces of liquid and has a re-sealable cap. Also pick up some cheap foundation in your skin color (Rimmel or Wet ’n’ Wild works well). When you get home mix in the white face with your foundation in a one to four part ratio. Apply this with a makeup sponge; make sure to apply all over your face, neck, and shoulders! If you just apply it to only your face you will look like a mime. Mimes are bad, they are BAD people… don’t talk to mimes.
- After you apply your foundation, I always find it good to brush it over with a light or even translucent powder. Both of these can be found at most beauty supply stores.
- Just because you are attempting to have a light skin tone does not mean that you have to give up any color in your face all together. In fact I really like to accent light or pale skin with a bright pink blush. I think that it contrasts with the lighter skin and gives the face a gentle and almost china doll appearance. Only apply this in the apples of the cheeks. Smooth it out with a blush brush up along the cheekbones and over the bridge of the nose.
- Don’t you hate it when you’re at the club and half way through the night you go to the bathroom and realize that all your lipstick has faded, leaving your lip-liner in place and you looking really funky? Here is a good way of getting around that problem. Most beauty supply stores carry lip and/or cheek stain. This is a liquid that when applied to the skin seeps in to the pores and stays put. It comes in a variety of red hues and can be used on both the cheeks and lips (even if it doesn’t say so on the bottle). After applying the stain, line your lips with a darker red or black lip-liner and use a gloss or chap-stick to give it a ‘natural lipstick’ look. Be careful however, it can be tricky to use if you have never experimented with it before. It’s best to try it out once or twice before you actually attempt to use it when going out. Once it’s on your skin, its there for the night!
- After all is said and done you don’t want your makeup coming off halfway during the night. It may sound weird, but in order to set your makeup for a rough night use hair spray. A cheap can of aerosol hair spray will bond the small particles of makeup to your face. Hold the can about 20 inches away from your face and shut your eyes tightly. Coat the face once or twice, letting the face dry in between coats. Yes, I know, it feels weird. Its OK… it’s supposed to. Just move your mouth and scrunch your nose until it doesn’t feel as funky. It won’t feel weird all night, trust me.
- So, you want [insert your favorite funky color here] hair but your boss said no way? Once again, beauty store to the rescue! If you have light brown or blond hair, you have it rather easy. You can just buy a can of the spray in color. Once you have sprayed it in to dry hair and let it dry you can brush and blow dry it so that it looks ‘real’ (make sure to set it with hair spray). If you have dark hair, temporary hair color is more of a problem. See if you can find mascara in funky colors like red, green, or blue. Apply them to small portions of your hair and then blow dry to set it.

Hey! those tips acctually work! Good job! i didn’t like the feel of the hairspray at firlst, though, but it turned out good!
