Leaves’ Eyes played at the Key Club on a date for their second USA tour as a support act for a power metal band. They were an opening act for Kamelot along with several other bands including two progressive metal groups. The first of these was very mainstream and pop like. They were fairly reminiscent of Linkin Park. The second band however focused more on the harsh male gutteral vocals and it was hard to tell when a song ended or started.
Leave’s Eyes opened up with “Farewell Proud Man” from their last album, Vinland Saga. After the band started playing this song, front lady Liv Kristine came out, the crowd was ecstatic. Through a good majority of their performing, the crowd got really involved. I was amazed at how good Leaves’ Eyes sounded. My friend Sharif had seen Leaves’ Eyes already (this was his sixth time) and he told me that was the best they had ever sounded. Leaves’ Eyes, much like Within Temptation, sounds like metal with heavy keyboarding, Norwegian folk elements, since Liv is Norwegian, and a female lead singer.
Halfway through their one hour set, Alexander Krull crowd surfed despite the clubs no crowd surfing policy, and everyone wanted to get a part of the act. My favorite two songs were “Legend Land” and “Elegy” In “Legend Land”, I could hear Liv’s voice gain power one note after another and in “Elegy” Liv’s voice was soft , smooth and very soothing. Leaves’ Eyes put on an amazing show.
